Church of Saint Irene

Katalimatsa Beach in the south, and Livoskopos Beach in the north, are probably the most striking beaches on the island in terms of natural beauty. Katalimatsa also stands out for something else: it was the port of the ancient city in Kastelli. Nestled among the red rocks today, it is a gorgeous sandy beach, but not so easily accessible. The easiest way to reach it is by following the coastal path from Megalos Roukounas. Head to the east end of that beach, and walk up into the ravine that ends there for 400 meters—up to the little church of Saint Irene (Agia Eirini). Notice the ancient relics scattered in the area around the church. From the church, walk straight down to the sea. There is no specific path, the ground forms terraces that gradually reach a spot above the beach. From there, a short path leads us to it.
