The small wind park northeast of Chora, the island's capital, now has more historical value than energy, as it was the first wind farm in Europe. When it was built in 1982, it consisted of five 20kW MAN wind turbines. These were upgraded in 1990 to 33kW generators. Initially, the park aimed to cover 25% of the island's electricity needs, but at some point it exceeded 75%. Today, the generators have serious technical problems, most are out of order.
