Lipsi does not share the country's problem with a low birth rate. Of the 784 inhabitants of the island, 200 are children. This is very encouraging, but it also creates obligations for the state to support the island's infrastructure with elementary and high school teachers. Both the elementary school and junior and senior high school of Lipsi are housed in beautiful facilities with open spaces and sports fields surrounded by the magnificent Aegean landscape. Overlooking the village, the elementary school was built in the 1940s on a plot donated in 1924 by a private individual. Since 2001 it has been designated a preserved historic monument. The single-story building has a simple rectangular floor plan and neoclassical features. In the early 1960s, its hipped roof was removed, giving it more height and better architectural proportions. With approximately 40 children and 6 teachers today, it is an all-day school (ending later in the afternoon than a typical Greek school).
