The small central square of the island's only village, Chora (or Lipsi) was named after Emmanouil Xanthos of Patmos, one of the three founders of the Society of Friends, or Filiki Etairia, a 19th century secret society that aimed to end Ottoman domination and set up a new Greek state. There is a bust in honor of Xanthos in the square.
