The island of Mykonos used to be famous for its mining activity, starting some time after 1900. Beginning in the mid-1950s, there was a great deal of processing and transport of barite. The old mines are located in the northeastern part of the island, but today there are only a few abandoned facilities and some buildings ruined by time.
