The Maritime Museum of the Aegean is a Public Beneficial Private Foundation of a non-profit nature which was established in 1983. It has been housed since 1985 in a traditional Cycladic building of the 19th century, which was once the home of the heroic captain and warrior, Nikolaos Sourmelis.
The purpose of the Museum is the promotion of the rich maritime history of our country and the importance of the sea in the movement of people, in trade and in the spread of ideas and culture.
In December 1987, its founder, George Drakopoulos, was honored for founding the Museum, with the Prize of the Academy of Athens.
The Museum's exhibits include ship effigies from the pre-Minoan period to the early 20th century, historical maritime documents, rare engravings and maps, ancient artifacts, nautical instruments, fittings and tools, as well as coins with nautical themes from the 5th century BC .X..
