One of the most famous churches in Mykonos, the church of the Virgin Mary (Panagia) Paraportiani is actually a cluster of five churches, with four of them (the churches of Saint Anargyri, Saint Sozon, Saint Efstathios or Eustace, and Saint Anastasia) forming the base and the fifth – Panagia Paraportiani – resting on top of them like a dome. The church was named after its location, as it is found by the 'paraporti' (small gate) in the wall of the medieval castle of Chora (the main town of Mykonos). Built between the 16th and 17th centuries, it is the only example of such architecture in the Aegean.
