On the pass at Ftelio, under Antonios Katsouleris, the last line of defense of the Psarians was organized following the successful advance of numerous Turkish troops after great battles at Kanalos and Erinos. The defenders knew that if the Ottomans passed through here, they would march unimpeded to the city, with its defenseless civilian population. In the violent struggle, most of Captain Katsouleris's men fell heroically, while those who survived finally blew up with their gunpowder reserves (on a Saturday in June, 1824). There are two monuments, the older one we show here (from 1952), next to the church of Saint (Agios) Vasileios, and a more modern one by the road.
