A traditional 18th-century building, typical of the hospitals of its day. At the time of the maritime expansion of Psara, it was used as a quarantine site for the Psarian seafarers who had returned from long journeys. The seafarers stayed there preventively during the required days to watch for the possible outbreak of any infectious disease they might have caught while traveling. The word 'Spitalia' is a Greek alteration of the English word 'Hospital.' Today the once neglected building has been renovated and transformed into a restaurant by the Greek National Tourism Organization, so you can enjoy both its idyllic location and Mediterranean cuisine including fine snacks (mezedes).
