In the settlement of Psara, the Municipality has created several squares, most of them dedicated to Psarians from the time of the National Independence War. Dimitrios Kotzias was one of the island's elders at the time of the disaster in 1824 known as the holocaust, when more than half of the island's permanent inhabitants and refugees were slaughtered or captured by the Ottomans. At the last assembly of Parliament on the eve of the holocaust, in the church of Saint John in Palaiokastro, Mavri Rachi, Kotzias was the one who proposed to fight until the bitter end, and finally to blow up the gunpowder silos (which was eventually done by Antonis Vratsanos).
