Like most Greek islands, Alonissos faced significant problems with a lack of sufficient water to meet the needs of residents and visitors, especially during the tourist season. As a definitive solution to this problem, an artificial reservoir was designed and completed in 2012 in Kastania, in the northern part of the island. With its synthetic dam, the reservoir in Kastanorema collects water from the surrounding hills. However, this project did not yield the expected results, so it did not solve the water shortage problem. Thus, in 2016 the municipality proceeded to arrange for the construction and management of a desalination plant. This project was judged very successful, and on October 5, 2017 the Municipality of Alonissos was honored with the 'Silver Award' in the category 'Water Resources Management - Desalination' at the Best City Awards in Technopolis, Athens.
