Heading down the dirt road from Raches, 1,800 meters from the point where the road forks off toward Megali Ammos and Megalo Chorafi, we will see on our right one of the island’s square wooden gazebos. Next to the gazebo, where signs point toward Megalo Chorafi, Path Eight (8) begins. About 2 kilometers long, it is very rough at some points because of dense vegetation and fallen trees. In the first 500 meters, we can see on our left ruins of the old fortifications that inspired the area’s name, Kastraki (which means small fortress or castle). Due to the altitude difference (from 90 meters to 350 meters above sea level), it is better to start your hike in Megalo Chorafi and head downhill. Megalo Chorafi is the starting point of four paths (six, seven, eight and fourteen).
