The nearest islet to Alonissos (just east of it), Peristera is a good place for shepherds and their goats. Dry and uninhabited, it stands out for its many beaches and its half-sunken wreck in the Kalamaki region. This shipwreck is the Alonissos barge that once carried the supplies of the island, but is now half-sunk and rusty. In 1985, fisherman Dimitris Mavrikis discovered another shipwreck in the strait between Alonissos and Peristera. Probably the most important wreck from the classical years (around 425 BC), this merchant barge was carrying more than 3,000 wine amphorae. To reach the islet’s beaches, you will need a boat (your own or a rental). Due to the proximity to Alonissos, the boat ride is quite easy. Touristic excursion boats mainly visit the bay with the modern wreck, and there you can jump off the boat for a swim.
