Firefighters' Outpost

800 meters northeast of Palaiochora, the Paliomyli mountain peak (299 meters) separates the area of Mesagros from that of Agion. There are ruins of old windmills there which were probably built on top of the ruins of medieval observation towers (vigles), since there is good visibility toward the northern part of the island and the sea. A few meters below the windmills, there is a wooden firefighters’ outpost, a tower to help control possible outbreaks of fire in the rich pine forest that spreads out in front of it. We can reach the outpost (at 280 meters altitude) via the dirt road that starts at the beginning of Path Eight and climbs for 1200 meters.
