The Ptolemies, monarchs of the Hellenistic Kingdom of Egypt from the 3rd century BC, were masters of Santorini until 145 BC. A large garrison had been installed on the island, and its commander acted as the governor, caretaker, or ordinate on Thera. The building to which a wide road leads was the headquarters of the governor and some of the members of the garrison.
