On August 6, the central church of Pyrgos, the church of the Transfiguration of the Savior (Metamorfosis Sotiros), is filled with pots of basil, thanks to the custom calling for young men to steal them from the courtyards and window sills of girls to decorate the church on the day of its festival. At the big festival, there is an orchestra with traditional music, plenty of white wine, and often a lottery; traditional fava and tomato bites are also served.
