Located in the southwestern part of Santorini, the village of Akrotiri belongs to the Municipality of Karterados and has 355 permanent residents (2011 census). During the Middle Ages, it was one of the island's castles (kastelias), with the rest of the settlement built around the tower that still stands today. Akrotiri is famous for its prehistoric settlement, which was discovered after excavations in the late 1960s.
