On the southeast edge of the island, we find the village of Perissa, which belongs to the Municipal Community of Emporio. According to the 2011 census, it has 678 permanent residents. Perissa is known for its famous black beach, one of the largest and most popular on the island. The entire structure and economy of the settlement are determined by the beach. In addition to dozens of accommodation units and restaurants, Perissa hosts one of the largest churches in Santorini, the church of the Holy Cross (Timiou Stavrou), as well as what remains of the Early Christian Basilica of Saint Irene (Agia Eirini), which was built at the end of the 5th century.
