Fira (or Chora) is the capital of the Municipality of Thira, Santorini. According to the 2011 census, it has 1616 permanent residents. Built above the caldera at an altitude of 250 meters, the settlement is the commercial center of the island and one of the most popular destinations for tourists (along with Oia), as it offers a stunning view of the island's volcano, the caldera, and the famous sunset. Fira has plenty of shops and accommodation and dining facilities. It is also the home of a cable car that connects Fira with the Old Port, from which you can take an excursion boat to the volcano or Thirasia. Also in Fira, we find the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, and the cathedrals of both the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church.
