The Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira hosts findings from the excavations of Akrotiri overseen by the Archaeological Society in Athens and from earlier excavations at Potamos by the German Archaeological Institute, as well as findings from other sites discovered during the more recent excavations of the 21st Ephorate of Antiquities. The museum opened at the end of the 20th century and can be considered an extension of the Akrotiri archaeological site, since it houses the frescoes and movable finds of this urban center during the period of its great prosperity (17th century BC).
