Shipowner Evangelos Petrou Nomikos, whose family originated in Messaria and Fira, financed the construction of the cable car (or 'teleferik' in Greek), which began operating in 1982. Located at an altitude of 220 meters, it connects Fira with the old harbor in three minutes. It can carry up to 1,200 passengers per hour, and a one-way ticket costs € 6 (in 2017). The cable car's revenues go to the communities of Santorini and Thirasia for public works.
