Nea Kameni, which is known as "the volcano," is the volcanic island created by the eruption of 1570. It covers 340 hectares, with its highest point 127 meters above sea level. It is a monument of major scientific interest, and the Ministry of Culture has designated it a historic place of exceptional natural beauty. It is an active but dormant volcano, with the oldest rocks 430 years old and the youngest just 50 years old. The island is a daily attraction for hundreds of tourists, who arrive at the island's bay from the Old Port of Fira to tour the island's craters.
