The village of Vourvoulos is located 3.7 kilometers north of Fira and 2.5 kilometers east of Imerovigli, in the middle of the northern part of the island. According to the census of 2011, its population is 535. The settlement of Vourvoulos was built amphitheatrically, facing the northeast and the east coast, specifically the beaches of Pori and Koloumbos (Columbo). It is a very good place for a quiet stay away from the clamor of the most touristy areas in Santorini. The village got its name from the word “vourvoula,” which means “bubble,” probably because of the topography of the region, whose volcanic origin has left it geologically blistering.
