Saint Nicholas the Konaki
(Agios Nikolaos o Kissiras, Kissiras)

"A dependency of the Holy Monastery of the Prophet Elias, built in 1764. The tomb of the Bishop of Thera, Dionysios (1741-1768), who is believed to be the painter of the church’s holy icons, is in the entrance area of the church (the narthex). This explains the church’s designation as “konaki,” a Turkish word meaning home or dwelling, which here refers to the “permanent” dwelling of the bishop. The church is also called Saint George the Kissiras. The designation of “kissiras” arises from the word kissiri or kisiri, which means pumice stone, the rock that dominates the whole surrounding area, as evidenced by the filled holes dug around the slopes and the quarries under the slopes of the Prophet Elias Mountain around the monastery of Saint George the Refuge.
