How to Get There
Coming from the port of Piraeus with a conventional ferry, it will take about 7 to 10 hours (depending on the stops at intermediate ports) to reach the port of Folegandros. The approximate one-way price for an adult without a discount is 36 euros, and 82 euros for a car. From the port of Piraeus, there are also high speed ferries that cover the distance in about 4 hours for 59.50 euros per adult. Local routes connect Folegandros with the islands of Sikinos, Milos, Santorini, Ios, Naxos, and Syros, as well as others. More information on schedules and reservations is available at www.digitickets.gr.
Road Network
A paved road running south to north connects Livadi, Karavostasis, Chora, Agali, and Ano Meria. Elsewhere, dirt roads lead to various beaches, and these dirt roads are accessible only by 4x4 vehicles.
There are many car and motorcycle rental agencies in Karavostasis and Chora.
Other Means of Transport
A bus runs from Karavostasis to Chora, Agali, and Ano Meria every day. There is also a taxi on the island (telephone: 6944-693957).
Regarding sea transport, boats from Karavostasis and Agali provide service to nearby beaches. In Folegandros there is no organized marina, but boats can moor at the port of the island, while they can stock up on fuel and water in the bay of Agali.
Many of the island’s points of interest (especially the beaches) are also accessible via footpath.
Useful Tips
1. The town of Chora in Folegandros is not accessible to vehicles. At both of the town’s entrances, there is ample parking available. If you plan to stay in Chora for several days without driving to other areas, consider renting a vehicle in Folegandros for the remaining days rather than bringing your vehicle to the island by ferry.
2. Generally the roads of Folegandros are passable, but think before you rent a motorbike. There are steep descents (such as the one leading to Agali), and some dirt roads that will be difficult to navigate on a motorbike.
3. A water bottle, a hat, and sunscreen! These are all you will need if you decide to explore the island on foot. Folegandros has only a few marked trails, but with the help of the locals, you can enjoy some interesting hikes.
4. The route to Folegandros crosses the open sea, and if the weather is a little rough, the trip may prove difficult (especially with a high speed boat). Consult the weather forecast and check the intensity of the winds before you choose your travel dates.
5. Be sure to visit the most beautiful beaches on the island, such as Livadaki, Agios Nikolaos, and Katergo. It is worth hiking the paths that lead to them, but there is always the solution of the small boats that can take you there as well, starting at Agali and Karavostasis.
