Thirasia - Useful Information - How to Get There

The main port on the island is Riva, in the village of Agia Irini in the north, while the tourist harbor and seaport of Manolas is Korfos. Although so close to Santorini by ferry, access is not continuous, especially if we want to take a car. The Greek state subsidizes a small ferry boat (which locals call a “pantofla” or slipper) that connects Athinios with Riva. Otherwise, the connection would be even less frequent and significantly more expensive. A more regular connection, although not for vehicles, is available three times a day in a small boat that locals call a "lantza," starting from Ammoudi in Oia and arriving in Riva and Korfos.

How to Get There

You can get to Thirasia in three ways:

1. From Athinios (Port of Santorini)

This is the only way to go to Thirasia with your car:

  • With the local ferry boat (called “pantofla” or "slipper") “Nisos Thirasia” (meaning "Island of Thirasia"). Itineraries: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday at 3:30 in the afternoon, arriving in Riva at 4:15, price 2€/person and 10€/car. You can return from Riva at 8:00 in the morning and 1:45 in the afternoon on Mondays and Fridays.

  • With the Acqua Spirit (seajets company): Sunday and Wednesday at 9:00 in the morning (duration 20 minutes) at a cost of 2.30€/person and 14.40€/car. More information on schedules and reservations at www.digitickets.gr.

*Because schedules are subject to change, it is a good idea to contact the Port Authority in Fira (telephone: 22860 22239) or in Thirasia (telephone: 22860 29143 and 22860 29238) to confirm.

2. From Ammoudi (Oia, Santorini)

The distance from Ammoudi in Oia to the port of Riva is the shortest between Santorini and Thirasia (about a nautical mile). A small boat that locals call a "lantza" runs daily trips connecting Ammoudi with both Riva and Korfos.

Daily Schedule:

  • Departure from Ammoudi in Oia: 8:00 in the morning, 12:45 and 5:20 in the afternoon (journey time 10 minutes, cost 1€)

  • Departure from Riva in Thirasia: 7:45 in the morning, 12:30 and 5:10 in the afternoon

  • Departure from Korfos in Thirasia: 12:15 and 5:00 in the afternoon

3. From the old port of Fira (Fira, Santorini)

Those who wish to cross from Fira can either go down the stairs to the old port or descend by cable car, and from there take a tour boat to the volcano and then Thirasia. Before you start, contact one of the travel agencies in Fira that organize such excursions, because they are not available every day. The cost ranges from 25-35€/person, depending on the tour package you choose.
