Location
Hydra is ideal for all types of walks. Perhaps the most beautiful route, for most visitors, is the one that starts at the bastion with cannons on the western side of the harbor (below the Grave of P. Kountouriotis) and ends at the seaside village of Plakes Vlichou and its beautiful large beach. The total distance from the town of Hydra is about four kilometers.
Walking 1,000 meters toward Hydra from Plakes Vlichou, we will reach the picturesque seaside village of Vlichos with its organized beach, tavernas, and rooms for rent. Notice the beautiful church of Saint Charalampos and the bridge we find at the end of the road to Kaminia. A short distance away, on Choriza hill, the first traces of human habitation on the island were detected.
Vlichos Beach is small but organized, with pebbles and some sand. Access to Vlichos and its beach is either on foot (30 minutes from Hydra), by excursion boat (regular services), or by water taxi from the town of Hydra.
100 meters from Vlichos Beach, on the way to Kaminia, we will find a unique bridge constructed in the Epirotic style (from Epiros, in mainland Greece) in the 17th century. Today there is a second, wider bridge a little above the old bridge.
