The longest tunnel of the rack railway (or cog railway, odontotos in Greek). Before you pass through it, consult train schedules in order to avoid an unexpected meeting with the train! While hiking along the railway lines, we will see many (smaller) tunnels carved into the rock, the train can just barely pass through them. Construction of the rack railway began in 1889 (during the premiership of Charilaos Trikoupis), and the line was inaugurated in 1896. It was one of the most difficult, complicated technical works of its time (and even by today's standards). The study and construction were done by French engineers and contractors. The toothed part of the route covers a total of 3,400 meters. The lines and wagons were radically renovated between 2003 and 2009.
