The Burnt Cave (Kameno Spilio) is one of the most impressive attractions of Halki. In this cave, women and children of Halki took refuge to escape the vengeful fury of the Venetian admiral Francesco Morosini after the Halkians warned the Ottomans that his fleet was moving toward Rhodes. Since the cave was unconquerable, Morosini lit huge bonfires at the base of the cave, bringing the wood from the nearby almond grove in the region of Amiglai, so those who were inside suffocated. This is where the cave got its name. Signs of smoke are visible even today.
