Kyfes

The kyfi is a typical rural building that we will encounter many times on the island. Until the 1960s, residents lived in these when they went to do agricultural work on the other side of the island. You will be impressed by the big rocks residents used to build the kyfes, even on the roof. The rocks were placed there with the help of a small earthen hill; donkeys pulled them to the top of that. After the rocks were in place, the dirt hill was removed. The kyfes are now used as sheepfolds for sheep.
