The church of the Virgin Mary (Panagia) in the settlement of Panagia is the oldest on Serifos (10th to 11th century). With a tile-covered tower, it is located in a small square in the village. It is also called Xylopanagia, or Wooden Virgin Mary, because according to custom before the Assumption holiday on August 15, men fought with branches for the privilege of leading the first dance around the old olive tree in the square along with their sweethearts. The winning couple would get married the same year.
