The area of Vagia and the hill of Chalara is associated with the intense mining activity on the island during the first half of the 20th century. An interesting hiking route circles around Vagia in about 2,700 meters (65 minutes). The most interesting part starts at the southern end of the beach and ascends to the mines loading dock in Poria. (The path at this point follows the road to the mines, and at some points faded remnants of rails appear.) The trail continues east across the hill of Chalara, reaches a few houses in the village of the same name, and from there returns to the beach in the west.
