The monument by the sea in Porto Koufo is dedicated to the victims of the Chinook helicopter crash in the area on September 11, 2004. The helicopter was carrying officials of the Greek Orthodox Church who had planned to visit Mount Athos. It crashed near Porto Koufo, not far from its destination of Karyes on Mount Athos. Seventeen people, including 5 crew members and the Patriarch of Alexandria and all of Africa, were killed.
