Strymonas River

The Strymonas (or Struma) River originates on Mount Vitosha, southwest of Sofia, at an altitude of 2,200 meters. After covering 274 kilometers in the territory of Bulgaria, it enters Greek territory. The total length of the river is 392 kilometers, and of these 118 are in Greece, exclusively in the prefecture of Serres. Five kilometers before its estuary, the Strymonas merges with the Angitis River, then ultimately flows into the Strymonikos Gulf (also called the Strymonian or Strymonic Gulf). The river is extremely important for both the environment and flora and fauna of the region, as well as for the irrigation of crops and hence the financial security of farmers.
