Six kilometers from Sidirokastro, Thermopigi has just 150 inhabitants. This small village became famous in 1998, when excavations began nearby following a local's accidental discovery of animal bones. As it turned out, after excavations resumed in 2011, these were fossils up to 7,000,000 years old! The fossilized bones of the animals are kept in the Paleontological Museum of Thermopigi, which has not yet officially opened its doors, but you can visit it if you make an appointment by telephone.
