The Church of the Panagia (Virgin Mary) of Armata celebrates every year on September 8 (Nativity of the Virgin Mary Day). This is also the anniversary of the naval battle of Spetses, when the Spetsiot ships led by Hatzigiannis Mexis expelled the Turkish fleet, helping to liberate Nafplio. The spectacular reenactment of the battle of Spetses and the blowing up of the Turkish armada by fire ship captain Kosmas Barbatsis takes place every year on the second Saturday of September. The festival ends with a barrage of impressive fireworks.
