The area of Pantanassa became known in September 2006, when the Greek Police found there the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus (Panagia Vrefokratousa), which had been stolen from the Monastery of Panagia Elona (which is 17 kilometers from Leonidio in Arcadia). It had been hidden on the site where there is now a shrine. The icon was returned to the monastery, which had owned it for more than 700 years.
