To the German Observatory

From Velanidia, follow the road that leads to the church of Saint (Agios) Myron, Cape Maleas, and the church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Kimisi tis Theotoku). Where you see a mill on your left, the dirt road continues straight to Cape Maleas and (at the sign) heads uphill to the right to the church of the Dormition. Turn right, and at the next junction do not continue toward the church, but turn left toward the mountain. The road goes up to a sheepfold. Continue for 300 meters until you see a small pedestrian sign on the left pointing to the German observatory. Leave your vehicle there, and take the relatively passable 1,000 meter uphill path to the observatory, covering 75 meters altitude difference (20 to 25 minutes). The observatory was built by the Germans in the Second World War for observation of and communication with the ships and aircraft that crossed the Myrtoan and Kytherian Seas. The view from this point is unique and definitely worth the tiring climb.
