Dormition of the Virgin Mary

The cathedral of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Kimisi tis Theotoku) in Castle Square in Itylo was built outside the Castle. It was a monastery in the Byzantine years. The original church was probably built on top of the remains of an ancient temple. Today's church must have been built between 1886 and 1889, making it older than the church of the Archangel (Taxiarchis). Marble tombstones are embedded in the outer walls of the church.
