The most well known church on the island built high on the hill above Hora and is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. In all probability, it was built on the site of an ancient temple, while the oldest inscription found refers to its innovation in 1687. The church took today's formation between 1816 and 1821. The icon of the Virgin Mary is safeguarded here. It is said to be from the Byzantine period and is connected to many stories, legends and miracles. The icon is taken around all the houses at Eastertime. Entrance to the Church of the Virgin Mary is along a cobbled pathway which starts from Pountas Square in Hora. It requires about 20 minutes to go up and the view of Hora during the walk is unique.
