Since June 2007, the world's first floating desalination platform has been operating at the entrance of the bay of Agios Georgios. A hybrid scheme of renewable energy sources (wind turbine and photovoltaic panels) provides its power. Water remains one of the most important commodities in the Small Cyclades, where it is scarce, and Iraklia has carried out pioneering work in this area. The Panagia village is self sufficient in water from its source to the SW of the village.
