Today, Agios Georgios is the most heavily populated village of the island and harbour of Iraklia. Almost all of the touristic infrastructure of Iraklia has been developed around this village. It took its name from the homonymous central church that was founded in 1834. In the past, the island was known by the name of Agios Georgios.
