According to legend, the church of the Virgin Mary Piskopianis (Assumption of Mary) or Panagias Piskopianis (Metastasi Theotokou) saved the island from the plague epidemic in 1728. This Catholic church was rebuilt in 1652 on top of an old building said to date back to the 6th century AD.
