The area of Cape Maleas is called the little Holy Mountain (with the big one being Mount Athos in northern Greece) because of the little churches and monasteries that were built there starting in the 14th century. The small whitewashed church of Saint Irene (Agia Eirini) is surrounded by the buildings of an old monastery, next to the ruins of an older church.
