The settlement of Kastro, which means 'Castle,' was built on the site of the Ottoman castle that was constructed in 1570 and destroyed by the Maniots and the Venetian Admiral Guerini. Along with neighboring Monastiri, they form today's settlement of Achilleio (Achilleion, Achilio).
