The Monasteries of Spetse
There are two monasteries on Spetses: the Moni ton Agion Panton (All Saints' Monastery), above the area of Agia Marina, and the Moni tis Panagias tis Gorgoepikoou (Monastery of the Fast-Hearing Virgin Mary), above the All Saints' Monastery.
Starting from the kiosk of Agios Mamas, we take the road for Agia Marina, and after 550 meters, where the road splits off to the right, we find the church of Agios Eleftherios. This church was built by the priest Eleftherios G. Eleftheriou in 1828, and was improved by his son Lazaros in 1859. It was one of the 24 parish churches of Spetses.
From Agios Eleftherios, we follow the uphill path to the left to head toward the Moni ton Agion Panton (All Saints' Monastery), the main monastery of Spetses. 1.5 km from Agios Eleftherios, we reach the main entrance of the monastery, after passing rows of cypresses. The tombs of Anargyros and D. Goudis (a pyramid) are here.
Before we ascend the road with the cypresses toward the All Saints' Monastery, a road heads off on our right which ends in about 850 meters at the entrance of the other Monastery of Spetses, the Moni tis Panagias tis Gorgoepikoou (Monastery of the Fast-Hearing Virgin Mary). The Monastery is new, built in 1984 by followers of the old (Julian) calendar. Behind the monastery, a path begins which leads to the church of Panagia Elonas (the Virgin Mary of Elonas ) in 1.5 km and to the Hara Estate (reaching the little church of the Panagia Mirtidiotissa (Virgin Mary the Myrtle Bearer), which is found on the Hara Estate, in 500 meters).
