Aegina's Cathedral (Mitropolis) is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Kimisi tis Theotoku), to Saint Dionysios, and to Saint John (Agios Ioannis). This three-aisled basilica with a dome, a marble icon screen, and three altars was built in 1806. The welcoming reception for Ioannis Kapodistrias, first governor of the independent Greek nation, took place here in 1828.
