Location
On the road to the parking lot behind the Town Hall, we proceed from Vytina to Kato Vytina (which means Lower Vytina, and is also called Palaia, or Old, Vytina). Near a ruined stone house before the church of the Holy Apostles (Agion Apostolon), we will leave the road and turn left, or southwest, toward the ravine. Soon we will find a marked path for an easy 1,100 meter walk through a very lovely landscape to the beautiful bridge of Zarzi.
Two walking routes continue from the bridge. One goes straight ahead, next to the bank of the Mylaontas, and ends at the main road outside of Vytina.
The second route passes over the bridge and (after about 570 meters) leads to the little church of Saint Nicholas (Agios Nikolaos), at an altitude of 1,000 meters. The path is no longer so smooth, because part of the trail is ruined, and part of it heads steeply uphill. Approximately half way from the bridge to the church (about 320 meters from the bridge), we will see a small shrine on our left. We continue to the right toward the little church that is clearly visible at the top of the hill.
The view from the church of Saint Nicholas toward Vytina and Mainalo is beautiful. The best time to photograph it is in the afternoon, because in the morning we will be looking into the sun (facing east). On the opposite side, looking west, we will see the beautiful mountain village of Magouliana in the background.
We can also reach the little church by road from Vytina. We start off on the main road toward Magouliana but turn right onto the first dirt road after about 1 kilometer.
