One of the most important historic Byzantine monuments in Arcadia is the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior (Metamorfoseos tou Sotiros, or Loukous, from the Latin 'lukus,' meaning 'sacred forest'). The first church was built in the 5th century, and today's church was rebuilt on its remains in 1117.
