Location
A very beautiful, short walk starts at the bastion with cannons on the western side of the harbor (below the Grave of P. Kountouriotis) and ends at the village of Kaminia. The total distance from the town of Hydra is about 1.5 kilometers. The residential area has now become part of Hydra.
If we continue on our way toward Vlichos, in about 200 meters we will arrive at Mikro Kamini, with the small pebbly beach of the same name (with a rocky seabed) beneath the old Eleftherios Gikas Olive Press, which is now the Castello night club.
At the edge of the port of Kaminia, we can see the old Mansion of T. Gikas (a notable public official of Hydra and benefactor of the Revolution of 1821), where the old Hydra journalist and folklorist Antonis Manikis, publisher of the very good newspaper "The Future of Hydra," lived and died. The house is also famous because dance scenes from the Greek musical "Mermaids and Guys" by G. Dalianidis were filmed in front of it.
In Kaminia it is worth visiting the Church of the Panagia (Virgin Mary) Myrtidiotissa on the Rachi-Kaminiou hill, which was formerly dedicated to Agios Georgios (Saint George) of Papakokkinou. It is said that Hydra sponge divers always prayed to the icon of the Virgin Mary of Myrtidiotissa to safeguard their boats before sailing.
If we ascend 300 meters to the south, toward Upper Kamini, we will find the beautiful church built in honor of Saint Gideon the New Martyr, and right across from it the Home for the Aged, a two-story stone mansion once owned by the Theodorakis family. In 1911 D. Theodorakis donated it to the municipality of Hydra for use as a home for the aged, which it has remained to this day.
